Avery Anniversary – Eighteen

Avery Anniversary – Eighteen

Avery Brewing Co.

Grade: C+
ABV: 8.12%
Style: Saison/Farmhouse
Serve in: Tulip

A dry-hopped rye saison. Whoa.

A very pungent beer; you definitely get the rye right away in the aroma, as well as some spicy yeasts, caramel, and citrus. The taste is bready and spicy, full of dark fruits and cloves, as well as a funky yeastiness. Unfortunately, these nice fruit flavors seem to drop away pretty quickly. The finish is dry and grassy, with a spiciness that lingers.

Overall, it was a little bit too much for me. It seemed a bit convoluted and not quite what I’m looking for when I pick up a saison. I just picked up a bottle of Avery’s 19th anniversary, so we’ll see if that proves itself to be more celebratory.
