Every single time I’ve gone to visit Wachusett Brewery, they are closed. I’m either too late, or show up on the day they’re closed for tours. Either way, there have been multiple occasions of me sitting in the Wachusett parking lot, smelling the malts, peering into the darkened gift shop, feeling like a sad sack. One day I’ll uncover this Wachusett conspiracy against me.

Until then, I’ll still drink their beers at home. I had a bottle of their Country Pale Ale the other day; a 5% American Pale Ale. It pours a golden/amber, very hazy and bright with a soft and bubbly thin layer of foam.

The smell is very mild; some light buttery tones and faint fruits. Besides a light malty sweetness and a pleasant fruitiness, there is not a whole lot going on here. It’s lacking in hop flavors and is a little too sweet for someone expecting a pale ale. I will say that it goes down easy and has a crisp and prickly carbonation.

Though it’s a little thin, Country Pale Ale has a certain je ne sais quoi to it.
